You could have a virus or a bacterial infection. Let's look at the differences:
Viruses
Bacteria
Viruses are tiny and can cause infection. The common cold and the flu are examples of viral infections.
Bacteria are larger than viruses and can also cause infection. Some coughs and sinus infections are caused by bacteria.
Many viruses are spread through body fluids. Some travel through the air.
Bacteria can live almost anyplace: telephones, dishes, sinks, and your hands.
Most viral infections just have to run their course.
Most common bacterial infections require treatment with antibiotics.
You do not need an antibiotic if you have a viral infection.
Your doctor may write a prescription for an antibiotic for you if you have a bacterial infection.
